What does "shaping" mean for a dog?

If you have a new puppy you will see it slowly gain control of its body as it begins to grow and become stronger.

Much like a pianist, dancer or football player, they need to condition their body so that they feel comfortable and can get even better at what they are doing.

When you are shaping a dog you are conditioning it to a "down" position or a "sit" position.  You are not only conditioning it into these positions but also getting them accustom to hearing your voice.  Much like a baby, you could imagine that a puppies hearing can be very sensitive so you will want to have a calm environment to train in.

According to the American Heritage, Third Edition, the definition of  "shaping" means:  "To cause to conform to a particular form or pattern; adapt to fit.".

When you practice this technique you are "shaping your dog or puppy.
