"The Big Picture

There is an incredible movement happening in the world.  A kindness revolution.  The old-style training is finally being put to rest, and the new is struggling to understand itself.  The pendulum has swung from the extreme of using only negative reinforcement to the extreme of using only positive reinforcement.  I have studied both training styles, and it is clear that the new school is far superior.  However, when appropriate and applied properly, a correction can be an extremely effective tool.  Used together, the two styles bring a balance of love and discipline to training.  It is time to steady the pendulum.

What is training?

Training is more than just sit and stay.  It's also learning about dog behavior and the canine-human relationship.  Once the owner has been initiated into this way of thinking, we are ready to train the dog.  First, you must get a sense of the dog's temperament.  Dogs, like people, have their own personalities and need to be treated individually.  A brash, tough dog must be trained much differently than a shy, timid dog. Recommended Books

There are countless books on the subject of dogs, their health, ethology (scientific study of animal behavior) and training techniques.

But here are ones that I recommend for gaining a better understanding - and I know these are not all of them. By combining theory, observation and practice you will gain a much better understanding of how to maintain a good relationship with your dog.
